The TikTok ban and My Opinion

The 16-hour or so TikTok ban was certainly something to talk about, with it being one of the closest things to online censorship in the US. If you want the short story of my opinion, its a band-aid solution to a long term problem. The long story is that I really don't believe that banning TikTok would fix the underlying problem of consumer information being leaked and being used against the US. Most companies have a contract that stipulates that you will give up your information if you agree to their terms and service, which has become mind-boggling as now you can give up a lot of details about you with the click of a button that says "I agree to the terms and service" (which, by the way, who even reads the terms and service of anything)? I believe that banning things left and right is not the way to combat the issue of personal information and privacy, rather, education is the way to go. More people need to know what the implications of giving away your personal data has, and more emphasis on the drawbacks of giving away your personal information.
